Bollywood DVDs: October 7, 2009

Here are some more Bollywood titles. Highlighted this week are directors Gowariker and Bhansali along with a couple of classics. Ashutosh Gowariker directed the Academy Award nominated film Lagaan and his Swades joins our collection. Sanjay Leela Bhansali, known for his beautiful almost painterly perspective in his direction, has Black (an homage to Helen Keller) and Khamoshi the Musical join the previously mentioned Saawariya.

One of the classics below is Mughal-e-azam which is the film playing in the background in one of the scenes of Saawariya. Unfortunately, our copy is colorized and the process that was used sometimes detracts from the film. The other classic is The Guide and stars Dev Anand a star of Indian cinema in the 1950s and 1960s.

Changes at RBD: A-B then C

Along with the change in the seasons comes change to RBD Library. And like all changes, some are pleasant — some, not so much.

First off we’re in the middle of shifting the A-BX books from the 2nd floor to the 1st floor. Then a backshift will happen on 2nd floor to free up space for our learning/information commons area. Included in this area will be the Miller Writing Center and Study Partners. The Writing Center currently has walk up hours of 6-10 pm Sunday through Thursday evenings.

Secondly, Caribou Coffee is near to completion. When that happens Stacks Cafe, located on the Ground Floor, will close. I hear that October 26 is going to be the official opening so I’ll try and keep you posted.

Finally, and this falls in the “not so pleasant” area, our book buying budget is restricted this year because of the economy so there are no discretionary funds. Books will be ordered on an as needed highly critical basis. Please check with your subject specialist for more information.

Step aside Fedstats.gov. Looking for something a little more intuitive for your governmental data needs, well you soon will need to look no further than Data.gov. You can get to the data in three ways: through the “raw” data catalog, the tool catalog and the geodata catalog. Currently limited in scope, Data.gov encourages suggestions as to what should be included and also provides access the those state and local governments who already have data pages. Data.gov currently catalogs over 300 data and informational sites. Many have data extraction capabilities like the Recreation Information Database, and some only RSS subscriptions like the White House Special Feature Video Pieces feed.
