Stumbling Over Websites: Scripts & Screen

June 24, 2008

I’ve gotten two reference questions recently on related topics — television shows and screenplays — so I thought I would give you some places to check out. These are, as far as I am aware, legitimate sites. If you have a favorite site that you use (especially for scripts), please leave a comment. If I get enough sites, I will pull the section for the television streaming video from the Communication Subject Guide and create a separate page.

Scripts:

We have a small selection of screenplays in our catalog that you can look at by doing a subject search on the not so intuitive phrase motion picture plays.

The Daily Script

Includes both television and movie scripts… Includes links for more script sites.

The Internet Movie Script Database:

Has a small selection of television scripts, but it does categorize the movie scripts into genres. An To find the script you have to scroll past the advertisements to the bottom where it says “Read <title> script”

Movie-Page:

Strictly screenplays, no television scripts.

SimplyScripts:

Includes television, radio, unproduced, treatments and movie scripts among other categories. Be sure to use the search box on the left and change the radial button to SimplyScripts.

Screen:

I am not going to spend much space on video sharing sites, like YouTube, as you probably know more about that than I, but if you want a huge list to troll through go to I Like Sharing Videos.

Television Shows: Streaming Video

A great directory site if you are just browsing is the metasite Television Shows in Yahoo.

Current Network Shows:

ABC.com Full Episode Player

CBS.com InnerTube

NBC.com Direct

Hula

Older and Classic Shows:

In2TV AOL Television

The Internet Archive

Classic Television

TVLand

Movies:

There are not a lot of legitimate sites were you can get current streaming video of movies for free. There are the commercial sites like ITunes and Unbox were you can rent or purchase movies and television shows. For older, out of copyright, movies, commercials or television shows there are several places you can go.

Database News: GreenFILE, Changes and more…

June 20, 2008

GreenFILE

GreenFILE is an EBSCO multidisciplinary database that draws on the connections between the environment and a variety of disciplines such as agriculture, education, law, health, and technology. The database attempts to cover the impact people and organizations can have on the environment and contains over 384,000 records. Topics include global warming, green building, pollution, sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, recycling, and more.

Interface Change for Two History Databases

We now have the EBSCO interface for America: History and Life and Historical Abstracts and the result is you can search these databases in the same way you search Academic Search Premier.

America: History and Life covers the history of the United States and Canada with Historical Abstracts covering the rest of the world. Both databases index a variety of journalism and communication journals and cover topics ranging from newspapers and journalism to television and film.

All journal content on Blackwell Synergy is merging into Wiley InterScience

If you are having trouble getting into some of your journals this may be the reason. Both Synergy and InterScience will be down over the weekend of June 27 while they complete the transition. All links from the library catalog should transfer so if you have problems with the ArticleLinker from our databases, check the library catalog first and then contact the reference desk.  Also, no new Wiley-Blackwell content will be published online from June 21st until July 7th. After July 7th, publication schedules will resume.

These communication journals are affected:

Communication, Culture & Critique
Human Communication Research
Journal of Communication
Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication

Synergy also contains many journals in the fields of history, psychology and sociology that can utilized by the journalism and communication scholar. You can see the list of Auburn subscribed journals affected here.

Three Plug-ins and a Scheduler

June 13, 2008

The Three Plug-ins…

Add to Search Bar

Lots of you have probably used Firefox Add-ons page to look for extensions which allow you to search your favorite pages without being on the page. Sometimes you find them — sometimes you don’t. The “Add to Search Bar” extension lets you right mouse click within a search box and create one on the fly. The first one I created was for the Firefox Add-ons page, and the second was for the seach engine at TVShowsonDVD.com.

Screengrab

Screengrab lets you copy or save a whole webpage, or just select a portion of the page, and turns it into an image. Many of the images that I use to customize library CMJN guides I create using Screengrab.

Adblock Plus

It doesn’t stop them all, but it does stop the majority.

…and a Scheduler

Doodle

Have you ever tried to schedule a meeting with more than one person through e-mail? It is frustrating. Once you register, Doodle lets you create a poll or event, invite participants and track their responses. It’s editable and exportable.

Stumbling Over: Websites

June 9, 2008

Here are some websites that I’ve recently come across. There are a couple video type sites and a couple of reporter/journalism sites.

Archives New Zealand Film Site

Currently has 158 full length videos online for viewing. The ones I spot checked came from the 1942-43 era.

C-SPAN Classroom: Free Resources for Teaching Civics and U.S. Goverment

Primarily designed for middle to high school teachers to use in there classroom. However, with registration you can search and view C-SPAN clips topics that range from the 1st Amendment to campaign coverage.

GloPAD (Global Performing Arts Database)

Includes digital images, texts, video clips and sound recordings related to the performing arts around the world. GloPAD was created by an Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) grant through the Cornell University Library.

NewsTrust.net

From their about page:

We rate the news based on quality, not just popularity. NewsTrust reviewers evaluate each article against core principles of journalism, such as fairness, evidence, sourcing and context.

Wired Journalists

From their mission statement:

iBreadCrumbs: “The First way to Save and Share Online Research”

June 5, 2008

Check out iBreadCrumb.com. According to Reuben Fine and Rey Marques, the iBreadCrumbs team, “…iBreadCrumbs is a recording toolbar for your web browser. Similar to what a DVR does for tv, iBreadCrumbs.com records all the webpages you visit while you research. Save, review, and share your research with friends or colleagues…”

iBreadCrumb example

I registered and downloaded this Firefox plug-in. See the results of my work: Finding the Comm Class Guide. It’s free and registering gives you access some great features from sharing your work to creating and exporting citations in either APA or MLA formats.

iBreadCrumb example 1

Once you are on the site click on any one of the links and a new window pops up that operates similar to a slide show…. and all the links are clickable too!!!
